ANNOUNCEMENT: Christmas Tree Drop-Off Sites 12/26/12
Properties paying the “Garbage/Yard Waste” fee on their monthly bills (green bag users) are eligible to use the Christmas tree drop-off sites. Owners and tenants of properties not paying the fee should contact their regular waste hauler for service. These sites are supported by fees, not taxes.
 
ANNOUNCEMENT: Lincoln Ave. Road Closure 12/27/12
Beginning immediately, Lincoln Ave. is closed between Magnetic St. and Cleveland Ave. for a water main break.  Closure is anticipated to last until 6:00 p.m.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Water Meter Replacement 12/21/12
Beginning January 2013, the City of Marquette Water Department will be replacing water meters in the South Marquette neighborhoods. It is part of our on going capital outlay project to replace existing water meters with new meter technology. Residents will be notified via door hanger to contact the City of Marquette Water Department to schedule an appointment. ANNOUNCEMENT: City Offices Closed Due to Inclement Weather 12/20/12
Offices at Marquette City Hall, the Municipal Service Center and Lakeview Arena will be closed today at 3:30 p.m. for the remainder of the day due to inclement weather. Marquette Police and Fire Departments will remain staffed during this time.

The Joint Work Session with the Marquette City Commission and the Sister City Advisory Committee scheduled for Thursday, December 20th, at 5:15 p.m. in Room 103 of City Hall has been postponed due to inclement weather. The meeting will be rescheduled for a later date and time.

The 4th Annual Disco Ball Drop Open Skating will be held at Lakeview Arena on New Years Eve, Monday, December 31, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. – 2:50 p.m. Bring the whole family, dress in disco, and skate to your favorite 70’s tunes. ANNOUNCEMENT: City Offices Closed for Holidays 12/17/12
Offices at Marquette City Hall, the Arts & Culture Center, located in the Peter White Public Library, the Municipal Service Center and Lakeview Arena will be closed for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays on Monday, December 24th; Tuesday, December 25th; Monday, December 31st; and Tuesday, January 1st.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Biosolids Storage Facility Dedication 12/14/12
The Marquette Area Wastewater Treatment Facility, located at 1930 U.S. Hwy. 41 South, has scheduled a dedication of the recently constructed Biosolids Storage Facility for Thursday, December 20, 2012. The Dedication is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

The City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center is welcoming citizens to anonymously nominate deserving members of the community to be considered for a Marquette County Arts Award.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Call for Design Proposals for the 2013 Marquette County Annual Arts Awards 12/14/12
The City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center announces its 2013 Marquette County Annual Arts Awards call for award design proposals. Each chosen artist will receive a hand-crafted award during the ceremony. The artist selected to complete this project will be required to create one award for each of the 10 award categories.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Shots and Stories Submissions Sought 12/7/12
The City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center announces call for artists to participate in the annual “Shots and Stories” exhibit. This show will be on display downstairs in the Marquette Arts and Culture Center’s largest workshop room for the months of February and March. Photographers who are interested in telling stories about their work are invited to submit their work to this non-juried show. There is no submission fee.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Right of Way Removal 12/6/12
With the winter season upon us, the City of Marquette is asking all residents to please remove all portable items from the right-of-way with the anticipation of the up coming snow removal season. Examples of portable items would be basketball nets, lawn ornaments, landscaping rocks, bricks and/or boulders. Any permanent structures that have been placed in the right-of-way are the resident’s responsibility to clearly mark the location for any future snow removal activities that may occur. Any damage that may occur to any personal items that are located in the right-of-way will not be replaced and/or repaired by the City of Marquette.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: City Manager Offers Community Office Hours 12/5/12
Marquette City Manager Bill Vajda will be holding his next community office hours on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, from 10:00 a.m.-Noon in the main floor conference room of the Peter White Public Library. The meeting is intended to provide an informal opportunity to discuss issues within the community, and to give citizens the opportunity for direct dialogue with City staff about interests and concerns.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Winter Tax Bills Mailed on November 30th 12/3/12
The 2012 Winter Tax Bills were mailed November 30, 2012. They are payable from December 1, 2012 through February 15, 2013 without penalty. A 3% penalty is applied to the taxes February 15th through February 28th . If you have not received a Tax Bill and should have, please contact the City Treasurer's office at (906) 228-0475.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Winter Property Tax Bills Mailed 11/29/12
Winter tax bills totaling $1.4 million will be mailed to Marquette City property owners tomorrow. Tax collection begins December 1, 2012 adn payments are accepted at the City Treasurer's office without penalty through February 14, 2013.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Mount Marquette Road Closure 11/28/12
Effective today, November 28, 2012, the road leading up to Mount Marquette has been closed for the season. If there are any questions, please contact the Public Works department at (906) 228-0444.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Presque Isle Park Playground 11/26/12
City of Marquette invites the participation of all interested community members in the planning and design of an inclusive playground facility for Presque Isle Park. The new facility will replace the existing playground at the park.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Presque Isle Road Closure 11/26/12

ANNOUNCEMENT: Picnic Rocks Parking Lot Closure 11/24/12
Due to inclement weather the parking lot at Picnic Rocks will be closed until November 27, 2012, when the Department of Public Works can clear the debris.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Tuba Christmas 11/26/12
TUBA CHRISTMAS is an international event and is held on various dates during the Christmas season in hundreds of different cities across the United States and in other countries. It has been a tradition in cities throughout the world since the first Tuba Christmas event was held on the Ice Rink Stage of New York City’s Rockefeller Center on Sunday, December 22, 1974.
Participation is open to tuba and euphonium players (high school age and older). You can check out www.tubachristmas.com for information about the event and/or type in “tubachristmas” on YouTube to see what it’s like at various places such as New York, Chicago and Grand Rapids. We are expecting around 30 musicians to participate from all across the Upper Peninsula!
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: City Wins Safe and Sustainable Snow Fighting Award 11/21/12
The City of Marquette has won a 2012 Safe and Sustainable Snow Fighting award from the Salt Institute for excellence in environmental consciousness and effective management in the storage of winter road salt.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Annual Turkey Trot Run/Walk 11/19/12
On Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. the Marquette Senior High School will hold its annual 5K and 10K Turkey Trot Run/Walk.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Channel 21 Service Disruption 11/16/12
The City of Marquette has experienced a failure with the equipment that is used to broadcast programming on the government access channel 21. Replacement parts are scheduled to be installed on November 19th , with broadcasting resuming as soon as possible. Videos of City Commission meetings and public service announcements are still accessible on the City website. We apologize for any inconvenience.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Work Requiring Street Pavement Restoration 11/14/12
With the local asphalt plants shut down, contractors and homeowners are reminded that work in the City right of way that requires street pavement or curb removal and restoration is prohibited. This restriction will remain in effect until the spring when the frost is out of the ground and the asphalt plants are operating. This restriction will not apply to emergency repairs such as broken sewer and water lines. Special circumstances will be reviewed on a case by case basis for approval.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: City Offices Closed for Thanksgiving 11/13/12
City offices located at Marquette City Hall, 300 W. Baraga Avenue; the Municipal Service Center, 850 W. Baraga Avenue; and the Lakeview Arena, 410 E. Fair Avenue, will be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 22nd and 23rd, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. The Fire and Police Departments will be staffed during this time. The Marquette Downtown Development Authority is extending an invitation to all local businesses, organizations, musicians and bands to enter a decorated float, vehicle or marching unit in the second annual Winter Snow Fun Holiday Parade, scheduled for Thursday, November 29, at 6 p.m.

The City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center and Lake Superior Art Association are proud to present the new gallery exhibition, Visual Textures. ANNOUNCEMENT: Investigation - Damage to the Father Marquette Statue 11/02/12
The Marquette Police announce the investigation into the damage to the Father Marquette Statue located at 501 S. Front Street in the City of Marquette. On November 1st at approximately 5:15pm, Marquette Police took the report of damage that had been done to the Father Marquette Statue. The damage consisted of the statue being spray painted with red paint over the face and chest area. The crime is believed to have happened between October 30th and 31st . A $500.00 reward has been offered by the Marquette Beautification Committee for information leading to the arrest of the individual/individuals responsible for the damage. Anyone with information can contact the police by calling 228-0400.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: City Receives Entrepreneurial Award 11/01/12
The City of Marquette has been recognized for its work to foster entrepreneurial growth and economic development in a study by researchers at iLabs, University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Center for Innovation Research. Marquette was honored as a four-star community, along with 53 other communities across the State.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery 10/30/12
The City of Marquette Fire Department would like to remind City residents to “Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery” as we adjust to Eastern Daylight time on November 4, 2012. Our annual campaign is to remind residents that battery replacement in their smoke detectors is part of a sound home safety strategy. This year, Energizer Battery has donated three cases of 9 volt batteries for use during this promotion. Working smoke detectors double your chances of surviving a house fire. Telephone, or stop by the Marquette Fire Department on Third Street, for a free battery. The batteries will be given one (1) per household as long as supplies last.

Marquette Fire Prevention Week Poster Contest winners will receive rides to school on fire trucks. On Monday, October 29, the first winner will be picked up at 0730 and dropped off at Bothwell Middle School at 0750.

ANNOUNCEMENT: History in the Making 10/11/12
Like this historic article from 1952 (courtesy of the Mining Journal) our community has an opportunity to adopt a new City Charter that has been updated to reflect the needs of our time. The new Charter would eliminate 75 outdated, confusing and conflicting provisions; promote economic growth; require better communications with the community; establish ethical standards for all elected and appointed bodies as well as City Staff; and would require intergovernmental cooperation. In 1951 the issues facing the community were very different; however, the need for an updated Charter is much the same. Our Community will have the opportunity to adopt the new City Charter at the November 6, 2012 Election.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: First Halloween Spectacle 10/11/12
On October 27, 2012 the City and Downtown Development Authority will host a large-scale community outdoor performance of giant puppetry, percussion and theatrical dance. Ravens on skates, zombie folk dancers, stilt walking spirits, a life-size dragon and skeleton marching band are just a few of the enchanted. As the evening grows dark, the community is invited to join in processions throughout the City converging in the Marquette Commons to witness Marquette’s first Halloween Spectacle.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Presque Isle Marina Project Recommendation 10/11/12
On October 9, 2012, a representative from the City's Harbor Advisory Committee presented their report and recommendation for the Presque Isle Marina project to the City Commission.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Winter Parking Ban 10/09/12
The City’s winter parking ban will be in effect beginning November 1. The winter parking ban requires owners of vehicles to find off street parking between the hours of 1:00am and 6:00am each night. The winter parking ban will be in effect from November 1, 2012 until April 1, 2013. The fine for violating the parking ban is $50 or $55 if unpaid after 14 days. Marquette residents are encouraged to find alternate off street parking before the parking ban goes into effect.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Lakeshore Boulevard Road Work 10/08/12
From Monday, October 8, through Friday, October 12, overhead work will be occurring on the WE Energies coal conveying gallery on Lakeshore Boulevard near the upper ore dock at the upper harbor. During the road work, traffic will be restricted to one lane. The motoring public is advised to watch for flagmen, obey their directions, and proceed with caution through the lane restriction.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Cyclocross Race 10/08/12
On Sunday, October 14, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. the KMK Cycling Club will host a cyclocross race at the Kaufman Sports Complex. This race will involve use of a short stretch of one lane of Powdermill Road, northwest of the park. Powdermill Road will not be closed for this event and the public is asked to use caution while driving in this area.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Fire Department Kicks Off Fire Prevention Week 10/02/12
The 20th annual Fire Prevention Week kick off event has been rescheduled to Saturday, October 13 due to weather. This year's Fire Prevention week, themed "Have 2 Ways Out," will run October 7-13 featuring several activities within the community and local schools.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Wastewater Treatment Staff Fights Foaming Problem 10/02/12
Marquette Area Wastewater Treatment Plant staff put together an article about overcoming the challenges of Digester Foaming. The article was published in the Central States Water Environmental Association magazine.
 
ANNOUNCEMENT: Community Visioning Workshop Upcoming 10/01/12
Community Visioning Workshop #5 will be held on October 11th from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Citizens Forum in Lakeview Arena. The Marquette City Planning Commission invites Marquette residents and business owners to participate in updating the Community Master Plan by helping create vision statements for the themes of "Land Use" and "Transportation." These two themes each embrace several topics that were identified and prioritized in previous "visioning" workshops held in the spring. The "Land Use" topics include downtown, neighborhoods, lakeshore, parks, and historic character. "Transportation" topics include the public transit, biking, pedestrians, complete streets, and roads. Your input will be appreciated. Light refreshments and a snack will be provided. The final workshop in the Visioning process will be held at the Marquette Commons on October 23rd beginning at 6:00 p.m. More information to follow. The Lakeview Arena has announced it's public skating hours beginnging on Monday, October 1, for the season.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Plaques Unveiled at City Commission Meeting 09/25/12
The public is invited to view the new plaques, honorably being displayed in the City Commission Chambers, when visiting Marquette City Hall. The plaques list City Commissions all the way back to 1871 when the first official City election was held.

Celebrate the hockey spirit of Marquette at the third annual Hockey on Third parade, slated for Friday, September 28. The parade starts at 5:30 p.m. on North Third Street near the campus of NMU and will continue along Third Street ending at Baraga Avenue.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Marquette City Charter Commission 09/20/12
The Marquette City Charter Commission was elected on November 8, 2011 to revise the Marquette City Charter. The revised charter will be voted on in the November 6 General Election.

The City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center’s is proud to announce a Free Anishinaabe Language class in the 2012 Fall Workshop Series. This workshop will be held Tuesdays, September 18th through November 6th from 6:00‐7:30 p.m., and is open to all ages.

Several local photographers responded to the "Vision of Marquette" photo contest opportunity provided by the Marquette City Planning Commission, as part of the "Superior Vision for Marquette" Community Master Plan Update. Photo submissions were open to any subject matter, but the photos submitted were required to have been taken within the Marquette City limits, capture a positive image, and express the photographer's idea of something essential to the experience of being in Marquette. ANNOUNCEMENT: Bike Path Closure 06/26/12
Beginning 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, the bike path from Cleveland Ave. going North to W. Fair Ave. will be closed due to storm water system maintenance. The bike path will be reopended to the public starting 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2012.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Champion Street Bridge Project Update 06/04/12
A reminder the Champion Street bridge will be closed and traffic should use Genesee to Front street to Fisher. Work will be starting on June 11. Also, at the very start of the project and again during stage 2 later in the project, eastbound trucks on US-41 will not be able to enter downtown on Front Street from the roundabout. Eastbound trucks will be directed to enter downtown at Washington Street or Grove Street during these times.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Lakeshore Boulevard Project Public Meeting 05/31/12
The City of Marquette and the Superior Watershed Partnership (SWP) are embarking on the first phase of restoring over a half mile of Lake Superior shoreline adjacent to Lakeshore Boulevard in Marquette, officials announced today. The first public meeting is slated for Monday, June 4th, at 6:30 pm at the Citizens Forum Room at Lakeview Arena; this session will include presentations from the City, SWP and the Michigan Coastal Management Program.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Utility Bill Statements Delayed 05/29/12
City utility bills that were scheduled to be mailed on May 18, 2012 have been delayed due to technical issues. City staff and the software provider have been working on the problem. Bills should go out early next week barring any other issues.  Residents may, if they prefer, use their last utility bill to make an estimated payment or they may wait until they receive their bill. Any late fees will be waived. We apologize for the inconvenience.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Community Master Plan Update Workshops 05/29/12
The first of three spring workshops to identify and document important issues for the community's future is being held on Thursday, May 31, at the Citizen's Forum in Lakeview Arena, from 7:00-8:30 pm. The other two workshops will be held at the Marquette Commons (112 S. Third St.) on June 4 from 11:00 am until 12:30 pm; and on June 7 from 12:00 pm until 1:30 pm. Each workshop format is similar, but three are being offered to provide options for residents to attend one that is convenient for their schedule.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Community Master Plan Update Initiative Announced 05/29/12
The City of Marquette is pleased to announce the launch of "A Vision for Marquette," the collaborative effort of community members and City staff to update the Community Master Plan. A new webpage will provide online access to the various tools and resources for easy and effective participation in the planning process.

The Marquette Arts and Culture Center is happy to announce that the Friday night “Music in the Park” Presque Isle band shell local talent performance series will be starting its 5th year on Friday June 15th. ANNOUNCEMENT: Waterfront Flag Advisory System to Continue 05/29/12
The Marquette Fire Department has begun posting flag advisories at South Beach, McCarty's Cove, Middle Beach, and Picnic Rocks waterfronts. Colored flags are to be posted at the waterfront to indicate swimming conditions. The flag statuses are posted on the City's website throughout the day by clicking the button to the left, "Waterfront Safety."

ANNOUNCEMENT: Henry & Clara: The Fords in the U.P. Vintage Fashion Show 05/21/12
The Friends of Fashion will present "Henry & Clara: The Fords in the U.P." Vintage Fashion Show on Thursday, June 21, 2012 at Upfront & Company, 102 E. Main Street, Marquette. The narrated show will feature authentic vintage fashions of the Ford era and will include both early family history and a pictorial tour of U.P. towns of the Ford empire. The afternoon begins with a social hour at 1:00pm, followed by the commencement of the fashion show at 2:00pm. Tickets are available for $25 each and include champagne, beverages, chocolates, and desserts.

The signal light on U.S. Highway 41 located at the Marquette Prison access road has been set up and will be activated for use Monday, April 23rd, at 10:00 am. Lane closures will also begin on Monday, reducing traffic to three lanes.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Economic Vitality Incentive Program Requirements 04/20/12
As the third of three state mandated requirements to receive revenue sharing payments, each city/village/township is required to publish a plan to show how they intend to meet the requirements of the state's Economic Vitality Incentive Program (EVIP) by no later than May 1, 2012. ANNOUNCEMENT: McClellan Avenue Extension Project Schedule Revised 04/20/12
The City of Marquette continues to make progress with the McClellan Avenue Extension Project, according to the City of Marquette’s Director of Planning and Community Development Dennis Stachewicz. “While some activities are slightly ahead of schedule, we still anticipate a September 25th date for the project’s completion,” he said. Weather may change the schedule, Stachewicz said, and major revisions will be announced to the media.

This morning the City of Marquette has begun removing the fill at the wetlands areas of the Bogwalk at Presque Isle. This is the next phase in the wetland mitigation project, and will prepare the area for replacement with native soils and species.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Marquette’s Drug Dog Recognized by UPAWS 04/09/12
Nero, a member of the City of Marquette’s K-9 Unit, was recognized this past weekend by the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter (UPAWS). Nero, a ten-year-old specially trained Belgian Shepherd, has been instrumental in fighting crimes and the illegal drug trade in and around Marquette.

The Marquette community raised $6,500 last year to donate to relief efforts after the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. Mayor Hisao Nichizawa of Higashiomi, Japan, recently sent his appreciation on behalf of the victims the Marquette community was able to assist.

On Friday, April 13, from 3:00-5:00 pm, there will be a forum held at Northern Michigan University (Jamrich Hall Room 105) on sustainable living. There will be representatives from the City of Marquette, Marquette Brownfield Authority, and Superior Watershed Partnership present to answer questions involving sustainable environmental efforts related to wetlands, watersheds, low-impact waste management, recycling, conservation, and other important ecological issues impacting all members of the Marquette community, along with information about how citizens can get involved. ANNOUNCEMENT: McClellan Avenue Extension Project Underway 04/02/12
Beginning Monday, April 2, construction will start on the McClellan Avenue Extension project. This project is anticipated to be substantially complete by October 31, 2012. During this phase, access through this area will be prohibited due to the construction activities. The trail access currently used by pedestrians from Center Street will be unavailable. Residents using the bike path are advised to use caution and stay on the pathway. The City of Marquette Police Department will be monitoring the situation for safety considerations. The City of Marquette asks you for your patience during the construction process.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Construction Project Set to Begin 03/28/12
US-41/M-28 reconstruction and resurfacing is set to begin in April of this year. The project includes reconstructing US-41/M-28 from the Carp River in Marquette to Bayou Street in Harvey, resurfacing the highway from Bayou Street to the US-41/M-28 intersection in Harvey, as well as constructing a multi-use pathway along Lake Superior.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Lift Station Replacement Project Announcement 03/23/12
Beginning on Monday March 26, construction will start on the Mattson Park Lift Station Replacement Project and continue until the middle of May, During this project citizens should have full access and Mattson Park will remain open. Construction activities will be concentrated on a line from the northwest corner of the park over to the parking lot north of the children’s play area and then through the parking lot over to the marina building. The marina building will remain open.

Due to the unseasonably warm weather and citizen requests, the City of Marquette’s Compost Site will be opening Monday, March 26, 2012. The hours of operation will be 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays only. ANNOUNCEMENT: Marina Launch Permits Required for all Boaters 03/15/12
Seasonal launch permits are available for purchase at the Lakeview Arena Parks and Recreation office and the City of Marquette’s Treasurer’s office. They will also be available at Cinder Pond Marina and Presque Isle Marina offices beginning May 1, 2012. The cost is $50.00 per seasonal launch permit, and $12.00 for an additional launch permit (restrictions apply). Daily launch permits are $5.00 and are available in the red launch boxes located at Presque Isle and Cinder Pond Marinas.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Public Service Announcement: Snow Tunnels 01/31/12
With the winter season upon us, the City of Marquette is asking all residents to refrain from building tunnels or forts inside snow banks by the street. Snow banks near the road can be a dangerous area to play as plow drivers and snow removal crews may not be able to see children playing in the snow banks. In addition, snow removal operations may weaken the structure of the bank, increasing the chance of a cave in. If there are any questions, please contact the Public Works department at (906) 228-0444.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Information on the City Charter Commission 01/03/12
The City Charter Commission web page provides community resource information about documents related to the work of the Charter Commission and five model City Charters. Hard copies of all resource materials are also available to the public at the City Clerk’s Office and at the Peter White Public Library. These resource materials have been made available to the public to provide background information on City Charters in the State of Michigan. The Commission plans to hold public hearings in the near future. In addition to the traditional entries, the committee envisions an increase in creative and entertaining floats, more music, more spectator interest, and more people drawn to Marquette's downtown for "can't-miss" celebrations. ANNOUNCEMENT: Economic Vitality Incentive Program Reports Available 01/04/12
The State of Michigan recently passed Public Act 63 of 2011. The Act replaces statutory revenue sharing with the Economic Vitality Incentive Program (EVIP). EVIP partially restores the revenues from statutory revenue sharing by rewarding communities that meet “best practices” standards in three categories: accountability and transparency, consolidation of services and employee compensation.

The Lakeview Arena’s ice rinks will be closed Saturday, December 24th, and Sunday, December 25th, in observance of the Christmas holiday. A “Disco Ball Drop” will be held on December 31st in the Russell Arena during public skating hours, 1:30-3:30 pm. ANNOUNCEMENT: Horse Drawn Carriage Rides Upcoming 11/28/11
Downtown visitors will have the opportunity to experience the nostalgia of holidays past with free Horse Drawn Carriage rides, Thursday, December 15 from 5-8 pm (last ride begins at 7:45 pm). Please note, though originally planned to start at the Marquette Commons, the rides will now begin in front of Donckers and Washington Shoe Store on the 100 block of West Washington Street. Rides will proceed down Washington Street to the 100 and 200 blocks of South Front Street, turning west onto Spring Street, north onto Third Street and back to the start on Washington Street. The last ride will depart at 7:45 p.m. Downtown drivers are asked to travel slowly and give the horse-drawn carriage a wide berth to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

On November 9, 2011, at 2:00pm (EST), the first-ever nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) will be conducted. All radio channels and all television channels will announce that a test of the EAS is being conducted. The test will be three and a half minutes long and will look and sound very similar to the local tests of the Emergency Alert System that occur frequently.

The City Fire Department advises the public that the access to Black Rocks on Presque Isle and the approach to the north break wall will be barricaded for the duration of the forecasted storm. The NWS has advised to expect very high seas due to strong winds out of the northwest. The Fire Department will monitor conditions and will have barriers removed when seas calm. ANNOUNCEMENT: DDA To Host Summer Bike Festival Meeting 10/11/11
There is a group that is exploring the level of interest (if any) in bringing back the Superior Bike Fest. Several ideas have been discussed such as a sprint race on Third Street on Friday evening, circuit race at the Island on Saturday morning, Crit race downtown Saturday afternoon, and on Sunday a grand fundo. The Downtown Development Authority and the Marquette Country Convention and Visitors Bureau are willing to support the event with administrative staffing, however, we need a group or organization to take the lead on the event. There will be a meeting for anyone interested on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, noon at the Marquette Commons (112 S. Third Street, Downtown Marquette) The DDA will provide pizzas and beverages for lunch. Please spread the word to anyone you think might be interested in participating to bring back a mid-summer bike race/event to Marquette.

Construction on phase one of the Bluff Street Parking Structure Restoration Project is nearing completion, with phase two scheduled to begin on Monday, September 19. ANNOUNCEMENT: Compost Site Closure 09/01/11
The City of Marquette Compost drop-off site located off of Lakeshore Boulevard, will be closed on Saturday, September 3, and Monday, September 5, in observance of the Labor Day holiday. The site will reopen on Wednesday, September 7. Hours are 3:00pm-7:00 pm.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Public Beaches to Close for Season 09/01/11
The City of Marquette announces that the public beaches, McCarty’s Cove and South Beach will be closing for the season on Monday, September 5th, 2011 at 8:00PM. Park Patrol Officers will continue to monitor the beaches and Picnic Rocks until October 2nd, 2011.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Electronics Recycling Opportunity Upcoming 09/01/11
Residents, businesses, schools, and community groups of Marquette County are invited to take advantage of an electronics recycling opportunity on October 1, from 10:00am-2:00pm at the Municipal Service Center (850 W. Baraga Ave.).
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Trash to Treasure Day 08/30/11
Residents are invited to participate in the community-wide “Trash to Treasure Day” on Saturday, September 10, from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. The purpose of the program is to provide a venue for the recycling of reusable household items such as furniture, lamps, electronics, and other working household items.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: City Hall Winter Hours Begin 08/29/11
Hours of operation for City Hall offices will change to Winter hours on September 6, 2011. Offices will be open from 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday. The Police Department is not affected by this change.

ANNOUNCEMENT: “Island Cruise” Longboarding at Presque Isle Park 08/22/11
There will be an “Island Cruise” Longboarding event at Presque Isle Park on Thursday, August 25, from 10:00am-11:00pm. During the event, Peter White Drive will be closed to vehicles along the one way portion. Pedestrians and bicyclists will have limited access to the island, but are asked to follow the instructions of the race coordinator and volunteers.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Bluff Street Parking Ramp Closure 08/18/11
Beginning August 22, repair work will begin on the Bluff Street Parking Structure. The project will be done in two phases. Project completion is estimated to be October 31, 2011. ANNOUNCEMENT: City General Election Charter Commission Candidates 08/18/11
The Marquette City Elections Board met on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 to review nominating petitions for City elective offices. All petitions were in order, therefore the nominated candidates will be moving directly to the November 8, 2011 ballot, as there will be no primary for these candidates.

The Marquette West Rotary Club is proud to announce their 28th Annual Seafood Fest on Friday, August 26, 4-10pm; and Saturday, August 27, 12-10pm at Mattson Park. Access to the City of Marquette Household Rubbish drop-off site, located at the old Cliffs Dow site, will be available through Lakeshore Boulevard to Wright Street only for Saturday, August 13, 2011 due to the Ore to Shore bike race, Access to Wright Street from Presque Isle Avenue will be closed for the bike race. The City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center, located in the lower level of the Peter White Public Library, will be closed for the entirety of Tuesday, August 23, 2011 due to Peter White Public Library’s staff in-service day. The Art Center will resume normal operating hours at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 24.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Caution Please - Street Centerline Painting 08/11/11
Beginning on Monday, August 15, crews will begin repainting street markings in the City of Marquette. The streets that will be affected include Hawley, Wright, Fair, College, Magnetic, Washington, Wilson, Grove, Pioneer, McClellan, Lincoln, Sugarloaf, Seventh, Division, Fourth, Third, Front, Lakeshore, and Presque Isle. The Warrior Relief Fund (WRF) and the Sons of The American Legion are excited to announce their dual effort in support of military members and Veteran’s in Marquette County! NEWS: Annual Ore to Shore Mountain Bike Epic Upcoming 08/01/11
August 13 will mark the 12th Annual Ore to Shore Mountain Bike Epic race from Negaunee to Marquette. Hard Rock (48-mile race), Soft Rock (28 mile race), Junior Rock (four-mile race), Little Rock (Kids one-mile race), Littlest Rock (Kids 50-yard race) are all races offered throughout the day. Last year over 2,300 bikers took part in the race. This year, the race committee expects to reach far over 2,000 participants.

NEWS: Live Music in the City of Marquette 08/01/11
The Marquette City band has an upcoming concert on Thursday, August 4 - "Music From Around the World” conducted by Stephen Grugin. The following day, Friday, August 5, all are encouraged to check out Music in the Park featuring Jen Copeman at 6:00pm, and Glistening Jazz from 7:20pm to sunset. The Marquette Fire Department will be participating in the annual “Fill the Boot” fundraising drive for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. This festival is held in conjunction with Downtown Marquette's Annual Blueberry Festival on Friday July 29, 2011 in downtown Marquette. Plans are underway for the 10th Annual Blueberry Festival scheduled for Friday, July 29, 2011 from 10am - 7pm. Washington and Front Streets will be bustling with sidewalk sales, food vendors, crafters, and children's activities. Local farmers and growers will be on hand to sell fresh produce including mounds of plump blueberries.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: New Form Requirement at Landfill 07/18/11
Effective immediately, residents are required to fill out the Waste Acceptance Form for all demolition, roofing and remodeling debris jobs. This form is a requirement of the Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority. The absence of a signed copy of this document will result in the County owned and operated landfill refusing to accept the load. The form can be found on the Public Works Clean-Up page, under Waste Management.

NEWS: Hiawatha Traditional Music Festival at Tourist Park 07/15/11
Each year's event features traditional-music styles that include bluegrass, old-time, Cajun, Celtic, acoustic blues and folk - including singer/songwriters - and dance. Main stage acts include nationally known performers as well as regional and local favorites. The 33rd annual Hiawatha Music Festival will take place July 22-24 at Tourist Park.

The Michigan Department of Transportation and the City of Marquette are partnering to fund and construct an addition to the existing multi-use path with a new segment along the west side of the McClellan Ave./M-553 corridor between Grove Street and Vistanna Drive. An open-house meeting will be held to discuss this project on Wednesday June 29, 2011 from 4:30pm to 6:30pm in Room 103 of Marquette City Hall.

The Jazz Concert with Motala, Sweden This Band Big Band and Marquette County’s Westerly Winds Big Band scheduled for Thursday, June 23 at 7:30pm will now be held at Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at 305 West Magnetic Street in Marquette. The Friday evening presentation, "An Evening with Jeff Daniels" has also been moved due to weather. It will now be held at the Lakeview Arena at 6:30pm on June 24.

ANNOUNCEMENT: World Youth Day Walk Announced 06/20/11
On Sunday, June 26, 2011, the Diocese of Marquette will be hosting a World Youth Day Walk. The walk will begin at approximately 4:30pm and continue through approximately 5:45pm. The walk will begin at St. Michael Church at 401 W. Kaye Avenue, then proceed north on Presque Isle Avenue to Fair Avenue, then proceed east on Fair Avenue to the multi-use path, then proceed south on the multi-use path to Baraga Avenue, then proceed west on Baraga Avenue to St. Peter Cathedral at 311 West Baraga Avenue. No City streets will be closed for this event, however drivers are asked to use caution when traveling in these areas.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: NMU Summer Fun Run Upcoming 06/20/11
Northern Michigan University will be sponsoring the NMU Summer Fun Run on Saturday, June 25, 2011 from 8:00-10:30am. The run will start at the Berry Events Center, turn north on to the multi-use path, cross Wright Street, the entrance to the city yard waste drop-off site, and Hawley Street, and then proceed to a point just south of the Dead River bridge before turning around and returning along the same route. No streets will be closed for this event and the public is asked to use caution while driving in this area.

Back for another season, the Village-North Third Street in Marquette will host a number of talented musicians during “Music in the Village” on Thursday, June 23 from 5-8pm. Stroll Marquette's Third Street Village corridor to hear an eclectic variety of local musicians perform street-side in front of participating businesses. Enjoy refreshments along the way.

Just like ice cream cones and flip flops, Marquette City Band and Music in the Park are back for the summer on Thursday and Friday evenings at Presque Isle Park. NEWS: Blue Lake Tour Brings Motala School to Marquette 06/10/11
The Motala-Vadstena Chamber Orchestra, Folklore Group Müsli, and Motala Big Band of Motala, Sweden will visit Marquette from June 23-26, 2011 as part of the Blue Lake International Exchange Program. While in Marquette, Motala students will perform three concerts. All concerts are free and open to the public.
   
NEWS: Bike To Work Day Upcoming 06/09/11
On Friday, June 10, the Marquette County Health Department will be sponsoring “Bike to Work Day.” Participants will meet at the Marquette Mall between 7:00am and 9:00am and from there bike to work, school, etc. using various routes throughout the City. No city streets will be closed for this event, however the public is asked to always be aware for bicyclists.

On June 10, 2011, the Marquette Fire Department will begin posting flag advisories at South Beach, McCarty's Cove, Middle Beach, and Picnic Rocks waterfronts. Colored flags will be posted at the waterfront to indicate swimming conditions. The flag statuses will be posted on the City's website throughout the day by clicking the button to the left, "Beachfront Advisories."

The Marquette 4th of July Committee has announced the festivities for the upcoming holiday. All events are scheduled for Monday, July 4, with Tuesday, July 5 as a rain date for the fireworks display. Wristbands to support Marquette’s Fourth of July fireworks are available at the City Manager’s office. There will be no change in garbage pickup due to the holiday.

Wristbands to support Marquette’s Fourth of July fireworks are available at the City Manager’s office at Marquette City Hall, 300 W. Baraga Avenue. The fireworks are funded entirely by private donations; the red, white and blue wristbands are priced at $3 each or two for $5. The office is open Monday-Friday, 7:30am-noon and 1:00-4:30pm.
   
NEWS: Children's Bike Rodeo Upcoming 06/01/11
Each year the Marquette City Police Department hosts a bicycle rodeo where children and young adults can practice riding in a controlled environment. Safety tips are offered, and helmets can be checked for proper fit. This is also an opportunity to register your bike if it has not already been done. There will be an obstacle course, a family friendly bike ride, prizes, refreshments, and the chance to win a bike. This year's Bike Rodeo will be held on June 4, 2011 from 9:00am - 12:00pm at the Marquette Commons.

NEWS: Marquette Wins “Race for the Cup” 05/27/11
The City of Marquette has won the Michigan Municipal League (MML) “Race for the Cup” Competition, it was announced today at the MML Regional Summit in Houghton. Each year the MML seeks entries to recognize innovative solutions to challenges at the local level that can be also adapted by other cities and towns to meet similar challenges.

NEWS: Shiras Hill Park Seeking Support To Win Grant 05/18/11
This month, Marquette can score a slam dunk for area basketball courts with the click of a mouse. Shiras Hill Park is one of 26 national finalists in the Sprite Spark Parks Project, and if it gains enough support, it could be awarded up to $35,000 in refurbishment grants. NEWS: Water Safety Week in Marquette 05/17/11
Community partners supporting the Waterfront Safety Task Force have seized the initiative, and continue to demonstrate great leadership as Marquette prepares for summer. NMU Recreational Sports and the American Red Cross have initiated their first-ever Water Safety Week in Marquette. This program is an excellent opportunity for people of all ages to learn how they can keep safe in and around the beaches this summer.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: City General Election Candidates Announced 05/16/11
The Marquette City Elections Board met on Thursday, May 12, 2011 to review nominating petitions for City elective offices. All petitions were in order, therefore there will be no primary election.
   
NEWS: "Ride of Silence" Bicycle Ride Scheduled 05/13/11
Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public isn't always aware of these rights and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves. On Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at 6:45 p.m. the Kitchi-Mi-Kana Cycling Group will hold a brief ceremony at Mattson Park to honor friends and family members who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Then from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. that same day, the Kitchi-Mi-Kana Cycling Group will sponsor a silent bicycle procession. The procession will start at the Mattson Park parking lot, then proceed north on Lakeshore Boulevard to Fair Avenue on (appx.) a 12 mile bike ride, ending back in the Mattson Park parking lot. No City streets will be closed for this event, however the public is asked to use caution while driving in these areas. Any questions can be directed to Sarah Anderson at 360-4414.

ANNOUNCEMENT: New City Code Effective May 10, 2011 05/11/11
The new City Code was approved by the City Commission at their April 11, 2011 meeting, and became effective as of May 10, 2011. Zoning chapters 80, 80.35, 80.36, 82, 85 and 86 were saved from repeal and shall continue in effect until replaced by a later ordinance and code supplement.
   
NEWS: Annual Big Bay Relay Upcoming 05/10/11
On Saturday, May 14, from 8:00am to approximately 10:30am the Annual Big Bay Relay will once again take place. This event will start at the River Park Sports Complex on Hawley Street, proceed along Hawley Street and then northerly along County Road 550.
   
NEWS: Rummage Sale Planned in Third St. Village & Downtown 05/06/11
The 2nd annual spring clean out rummage sale will take place on Friday, May 13 from 10:00am until 4:00pm in front of various participating Downtown and Third Street businesses. Saturday, May 14 from 9:00am until 2:00pm the local merchants will be combining their inventory for a community sale in the River Valley Bank parking lot on north Third Street.
   
NEWS: Seasonal Roads Open 05/06/11
The road around Presque Isle island is open to vehicular traffic for the season. The hours are 7:00am to 11:00pm. The hours for walking around the island are: Saturday and Sunday 7:00 am - 10:00am; Monday and Wednesday 6:00 - 8:00pm; Tuesday and Thursday 7:00am - 1:00pm. The road leading up to Mount Marquette is also now open for the season.
   
NEWS: Hope Starts Here Challenge Upcoming 05/06/11
On Saturday, May 7, 2011, beginning at 9:00am and continuing through 12:00pm, the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center will be hosting their "Hope Starts Here Challenge." Events will include 5K and 10K runs, a duathlon, and a family-friendly walk and bike ride on the multi-use path. The family-friendly walk and bike ride will start at Lakeview Arena and follow the multi-use path north toward Presque Isle as far as individually desired.

The second National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011. Leaves, grass clippings and garden debris collection will take place May 2 - May 13. Previous dates of April 25 - May 6 have been adjusted due to the current weather conditions. Also, the Compost Site will be closed on Saturday, April 23, due to the Good Friday holiday, reopening on April 25.

The travel-based magazine article entitled "The Wonderful Wilderness of Michigan's Upper Peninsula" emphasizes the beauty of Northern Michigan as well as the history and culture of the Upper Peninsula. The picturesque region, wrote American naturalist Edwin Way Teale, is "a land of wonderful wilderness."
   
NEWS: Marquette City Band Seeks New Members 04/20/11
The Marquette City Band seeks new members for it's 2011 Summer Season. The season includes seven concerts, beginning with a first rehearsal on June 7 and ending with a concert on August 4. Open auditions will be held on Wednesday, May 25 from 5-9pm. at the Marquette Senor High School Band Room. Audition requirements include a five minute etude and sight reading. NEWS: Lower Michigan Gift Store Seeks U.P. Artwork 04/15/11
A Lansing-based gift store is interested in obtaining the work of Upper Peninsula artists to sell their works at Michigania, a shop located directly in back of the Governor’s office in Lansing. Currently no U.P. artwork is available at the store, and the owner would like to change this. NEWS: City of Marquette Japanese Relief Fund Continues to Grow 04/15/11
Last month an earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters hit the people of Japan, and the City of Marquette moved quickly to establish a fund through the Marquette County Community Foundation (MCCF) to accept donations for disaster relief. The MCCF agreed to accept donations through September 30, 2011, with all funds donated to Marquette’s Sister City of Higashiomi, Japan. Marquette Mayor, John Kivela, noted that as of Thursday, April 14th, $5,455 had already been deposited within the City fund established in partnership with the Marquette County Community Foundation.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Police Department to Host Silent Bike Auction 04/14/11
On May 18, the Marquette Police will hold a silent bicycle auction to reduce the number of found bicycles that have not been claimed. Viewing and bidding will be held between noon and 6:00pm in the Cold Storage building located at the Municipal Service Center (850 W. Baraga). Follow the orange cones to the building. The winning bidders will be notified by phone and the items can be picked up on Wednesday, May 25, between noon and 6:00 pm. Payment is by cash or check only. NEWS: Marquette Named One of the Top Micropolitans

Marquette was recently named one of the top micropolitans by Site Selection Magazine. The U.S. Census Bureau defines a micropolitan area as a rural county whose largest city does not exceed a population of 50,000. Five communities, including Marquette, tied for the #20 spot, out of a total of 576 micropolitan areas in the nation.

NEWS: 2011 Farmers & Artists Market Applications Being Accepted

The Marquette Downtown Development Authority is currently accepting applications for the 2011 Downtown Marquette Farmers & Artists Market. The market will be open Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Marquette Commons, located at 112 South Third Street, Marquette. The regular season begins with a grand opening on May 21 and runs through October 29. A $60.00 application fee permits farmers, growers, producers, and artisans to sell every Saturday throughout the season. Applicants who would like to participate in the market but cannot commit to a full season may apply as a daily vendor. Applications for full-season vendors must be received at the Downtown Development Authority office, 203 South Front Street, Suite 1-B, Marquette, MI 49855 by Friday, April 15. Daily vendor applications will be accepted through Thursday, June 30. NEWS: 2011 Marina Rate Presentation 03/16/11
The City of Marquette maintains two grant-in-aid marinas funded through the MDNR – Waterways Division. For 2011, the Waterways Commission established a ten-step rate schedule. Grant-in-Aid facilities must choose schedule rates which are approved by the Michigan DNR. The steps offer greater flexibility when choosing rates to meet local financial obligations. Recently, this information was presented to the City Commission along with recommendations for the upcoming season.

The City of Marquette and the Superior Watershed Partnership (SWP) have been awarded grants totaling $315,000 for coordinating residential energy conservation initiatives, it was announced today by the State Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth (DELEG). In total, over a million dollars in grant funds will benefit the residents of the City of Marquette and the local economy.
   
ANNOUNCEMENT: Waterfront Safety Task Force Preliminary Report Available 03/01/11
The Waterfront Safety Task Force was established on August 30, 2010 by the City Commission. This group was charged with in-depth exploration of the four tenets of waterfront safety: education/awareness, shore/beach support, off-shore/afloat support, and emergency preparedness and response. The group has prepared a preliminary report that incorporates these elements as a part of a set of recommendations designed to enhance the safety & enjoyment of the waterfront.

The Marquette County Law Enforcement Officers' and Marquette County Firefighters' annual PIGS N' HEAT Charity Hockey Game will be held on March 16 at 7:00pm, at the Lakeview Arena. Tickets are available for $1.00. They can be purchased from any police officer, firefighter or at the Police / Fire Departments. This year there will be lots of prizes, including a $1,000 grand prize.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Marina Launch Permits Required Beginning in March 02/22/11
Beginning March 1, all boaters will be required to obtain a permit to launch a boat at either Cinder Pond or Presque Isle Marinas. Seasonal launch permits are available for purchase at the Lakeview Arena Parks & Recreation office, or at the Treasurer’s office. The cost is $50 per permit. Daily launch permits are $5 and are available in the red launch boxes located at Presque Isle and Cinder Pond Marinas.

Marquette City Hall, the Municipal Service Center and Lakeview Arena offices and rinks will be closed on Friday, December 24th, and Monday, December 27th, in observance of the Christmas holiday. These offices will also be closed Friday, December 31st, and Monday, January 3rd, for the New Year’s holiday. The Lakeview Arena’s ice rinks will be open for regular skating hours on Thursday, December 30th. A “Disco Ball Drop” will be held that day in the Russell Arena during public skating hours, 1:00-2:50 p.m. Come dressed in ‘70s attire and admission will be only $2; otherwise, standard rates apply. Call the Lakeview Arena at 228-0490 for further information. The City’s Arts & Culture Center, located in the Peter White Public Library, will be closed from December 24th through January 3rd. Marquette Police and Fire Departments will remain staffed during the holidays.
   
NEWS: Christmas Tree Drop-Off Sites 12/17/10
Properties paying the "Garbage/Yard Waste" fee on their monthly bills (green bag users) are eligible to use the Christmas tree drop-off sites. Owners and tenants of properties not paying the fee should contact their regular waste hauler for service. These sites are supported by fees, not taxes. Beginning January 1, 2011 through January 16, 2011 there will be two (2) drop-off sites available for Christmas tree disposal. One site is located at the west end of the Lakeview Arena parking lot, place tree inside orange fencing. The second site is the Baraga Avenue ice rink located east of 850 W. Baraga Avenue. Access can be obtained from Baraga Avenue or West Spring Street, place tree inside orange fencing. NEWS: Annual Tree Lighting Event Upcoming 11/23/10
The City of Marquette 35th annual tree lighting will be held on Thursday, December 2, 2010 at 5:30 PM at the Marquette Commons. The festivities will begin at 5:00pm with a performance by the Marquette Senior High School Redman Chorale. Santa will travel via a Marquette City Fire Truck and begin his journey this year at 5:15pm at the corner of North Third Street and Fair Avenue lighting the Village as he goes by. Santa will travel down Third to arrive at the Marquette Commons at 5:30PM. Marquette City Mayor John Kivela will be on hand to greet him and with a little sprinkle of magic dust they will light the Holiday Tree. Pony rides will be available for a nominal fee. ANNOUNCEMENT: Marquette Community Schools Turkey Trot 11/22/10
On Thursday, November 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. there will be a 5K and 10K walking/running event. This longstanding event will begin at the Marquette Senior High School and proceed west along Fair Avenue to the multi-use path where it will then cross Fair Avenue and proceed northerly along the path to Hawley Street, then east along the path to Lakeshore Boulevard, then northerly along the path on Lakeshore Boulevard to the coal dock. Runners/walkers will return back along the same route to finish at the Marquette Senior High School. The 5K walk/run event will follow part of the same route but turn around near Tourist Park. An alternate route may have to be followed in the event of inclement conditions. No city streets will be closed for this event, however the public is asked to use caution while driving in this area. NEWS: World's Largest Piece of Copper Now in Marquette 10/19/10
Presque Isle Park is now home to the world's largest piece of glacial copper. Weighing in at over 28 tons (56,000 pounds) the copper has become an instant attraction for residents, visitors, school groups and NMU students. The late Upper Peninsula historian Fred Rydholm was instrumental in securing this unique natural history specimen for Marquette. The Superior Watershed Partnership (SWP) in cooperation with the Marquette Community Foundation (MCF) and the Ancient Artifact Preservation Society (AAPS) are coordinating a capital campaign to purchase the copper and make it a permanent community exhibit. Reminder for City Residents that brush collection will take place next week from Monday, October 25 through Friday, October 29. No other materials are being collected at this time. On Sunday, October 10 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. the KMK Cycling Club will be hosting a cyclocross race at the Kaufman Sports Complex. Permits for the 2010-2011 season can be purchased early beginning on September 1 in the City Clerk's office. The park opens for use on November 1 for the season.

NEWS: Street Improvement and Bituminous Paving Project 07/27/10
Beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 29, Payne & Dolan. Inc. will be conducting ride quality measurements on streets that have been scheduled for mill and overlays under our Street Improvement and Bituminous Paving Project. This process is short in duration and should have minimal disruption to traffic. The ride quality is another term for pavement roughness. Measuring the roughness of the street surface prior to and after our street overlays will provide the quality control required to meet construction standards. The following streets will have these measurements: Ridge Street from McClellan to Meeske Avenue, Fair Avenue from Lincoln to McClellan Avenue, Pioneer Road from Altamont to McClellan Avenue, Elder Drive. West Elder Drive, and Hampton Street from Adams to Albion Street. A standard surface profile measurement system will be similar to the one shown here.

NEWS: Second Annual Marquette Trail 50 Ultramarathon Upcoming 07/26/10
The course consists of a 32 mile loop (50k) with an 18 mile out and back for the 50 milers. The course is mostly single-track. Parts of the trail runs along Lake Superior. Most of the trail is easy to moderate running with a few significant climbs and technical areas. This is a highly anticipated race for well-trained distance runners. The race is set to take place on August 21st and begins and ends at Tourist Park.
   
NEWS: Marquette County's Ore to Shore Mountain Bike Epic 07/26/10
The 11th annual Ore to Shore is scheduled for August 14. The Ore to Shore is a challenging 48-mile course, with riders gearing up at the start line in Negaunee, traveling through Ishpeming, running along side of the Dead River all the way into Marquette to the Lake Superior shoreline. A shorter race is available as well as children's courses.
   
NEWS: Muscular Dystrophy Association "Fill the Boot" Fundraiser 0719/10
On Friday, July 23 and Saturday, July 24 the City of Marquette Fire Department will participate in the annual "Fill the Boot" fundraising drive for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Firemen will raise funds at the following times and street intersections: Friday, July 23, 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. McClellan & Cleveland Avenues and Third Street & Hewitt Avenue; Saturday, July 24, 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Third Street & Hewitt Avenue and Front & Washington Street. NEWS: National Night Out & National Noon Out 2010 07/15/10
National Night Out (NNO) 2010 will be held during the week of August 2-8. This will be the 13th year NNO has been coordinated in Marquette County. NNO is about building community spirit and celebrating our safe environment. Residents are encouraged to throw block parties, host barbeques, or hold other safe and alcohol-free social gatherings so that they can get to know their neighbors. Law enforcement officers will visit registered parties and address neighborhood safety concerns. National Noon Out is similar to National Night Out in that its goal is to prevent crime. Marquette County business owners and employees are encouraged to take their lunch hour on Tuesday, August 3 to socialize with workers from nearby businesses.
   
NEWS: Seventh Street Extension Construction is Underway 07/13/10
“The street has been designed to accommodate a reasonable level of traffic with the principle that this will become another option…I think what you will see is a large amount of traffic initially, then patterns will begin to dissipate to where drivers feel more comfortable," said City Planner Dennis Stachewicz.

The City of Marquette Compost drop-off site located at the old Cliffs Dow site off of Lakeshore Boulevard was closed on Saturday, July 3, 201 0 and Monday, July 5, 2010 due to the 4th of July holiday. NEWS: City Receives Designation as Bicycle Friendly Community 6/23/10
The League of American Bicyclists designated the City of Marquette with the Bronze Award for Bicycle Friendly Community. A Bronze Bike, bike rack was given to the City of Marquette in recognition of the award.
   
NEWS: Superior Bike Fest 6/23/10
The event will take place beginning Friday, June 25, downtown Marquette, with music and entertainment throughout the evening. The race and other related activities will run all weekend.

The 4th of July parade will take place July 3rd at 2:00 p.m. with fireworks on July 4th at dusk. The Annual Exchange Club International Food Festival will take place July 2, 3, and 4 at Ellwood Mattson Lower Harbor Park. *City Hall offices will be closed on Monday, July 5th in recognition of the July 4th Holiday. Recently the Marquette City Commission voted unanimously to offer the position of City Manager to William Vajda of Rockville, MD, and Mr. Vajda has accepted. This offer is subject to the City and Vajda reaching agreement on a mutually-acceptable employment agreement and start date.

NEWS: Rip Current Gauge Proposed 3/11/10
The water at Picnic Rocks can be hazardous because of the longshore currents that flow between the beach and the rocks. Two NMU students are proposing deployment of a current meter at Picnic Rocks to collect and report data to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Association and City of Marquette Fire & Rescue.

Congratulations, Marquette! The voting is complete, and Marquette has been named the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 2010 Dozen Distinctive Destinations Fan Favorite! From an announcement event with over 300 people in attendance to working with Northern Michigan University to partnering with local businesses, Marquette swept the voting competition with over 35% of the votes!
   
NEWS: Heartwood Forestland Ad-Hoc Committee Final Report & Recommendations 2/8/10
The Heartwood Forestland Ad-Hoc Committee presented a report on their findings at the City Commission meeting on February 8, 2010. Committee Chairman Bob Cambensy said the charge given to the committee was to establish areas best suited: to conserving public recreation, to establish areas for potential commercial and residential development, and to develop partnerships for development and maintenance of recreation properties. He said the final report is a consensus of the committee. In summary there are nearly 930 acres of land identified as having potential for development, 1,063 acres were identified as best for conservation and recreation, and more.
