Learn Not to Burn Program

In 1994, the Marquette City Fire Department presented a new program to the Marquette Board of Education, as well as the Teacher's Union and Safety Committee. The teaching of "fire safety" did not reach past 2nd grade Fire Prevention Week activities. It was not difficult to show a need for an educational tool that would reach further, and expose more school aged children. The School Board and Teacher's Union decided to adopt the new program and implement it that school year.

This program, called "Learn Not To Burn", was a collaborative effort between Fire Officials and Education professionals. The program is endorsed by the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), and is designed to incorporate fire safety lessons with everyday lessons taught in subjects like: math, science, health, and gym. Learn Not To Burn targets children from the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. The.main instruction of the lessons of the program is taught by the teachers in their regular classes.

Marquette Fire personnel receive training on the.implementation of the program and have quarterly visits into each of the classrooms with the City of.Marquette to re-enforce the materials that have.already been presented. Visits are as non-intrusive as possible and generally last only 15-20 minutes.

Learn Not to Burn is a national recognized and accepted program that has shown great results when children are confronted with emergency situations. Marquette Fire Department is proud of the role that it plays in the education of the children of the community that it protects and serves.
